Raw Vegan Detox Challenge

Hello again friends. This is a different type of post, for anyone interested, I have decided since it's spring, it's time for some spring cleaning. Only this time instead of my wardrobe (let's face it I have a lack of clothes not an overabundance in OZ), I'm going to clean out my diet. I have been a vegetarian for about 17 years now and up until about 2 years ago I ate anything that wasn't meat. Then I got a bit smarter and tried to also cut out anything that came from an animal, no eggs, cheese, milk, and the likes. Although, I am simply not very strict about that at all. I don't BUY anything that comes from an animal so I would say my diet is 85% give or take strict, but I often give in to temptations at work, restaurants or out, to cheese, candy bars, ice cream, pizza, etc. Anyhow, I have become a 9-5er, aka I sit at a desk for at least four hours a day and then I sit in meetings or family visits for the other 4 hours a day and my waistline took a small toll for that.

Now its time for a spring cleaning. I have a strong belief in the power of food, good foods that can do a body good. I want to get back on track to healthy diet that makes me feel good and gives me energy (french fries twice a week don't seem to do that), so I decided I needed something extreme to kick start the idea. I would like to lose 5 kilograms (around 10 pounds) of weight, that would put me just under the weight I was before I went abroad in August 2009 and I would like to increase my exercise/yoga regime, increase deep sleeping, my complexion, and overall feeling of happiness/energy. Those are the reasons behind my detox plain and simple. I do not plan to stay a raw vegan after these 7 (maybe more) days, but I plan to remain eating healthy and cutting out chips, fried foods, and well junk basically. So that's that. If you are wondering what a raw vegan diet is, its basically eating anything and everything that doesn't come from an animal but is not cooked and is not processed, so that means NO pasta, bread, rice, flour, sugar, or anything that comes in a package, jar, or plastic bag (more or less). What can I eat? TONS OF FOOD. It's pretty amazing all the food out there that we either forget about, don't know or ignore. I went to the market yesterday and two grocery stores and spent a fortune and came home with a variety of about 20 different vegetables and 10 fruits, I also bought 5 different nuts, seeds, raisins, dried fruits, herbs, and my one packaged item, tahini. Tahini is just ground sesame seeds. Common ingredient in hummus (which I will probably miss this week). So ground sesame seeds are OK and they make a GREAT salad dressing. I could have also bought natural peanut butter or almond butter but decided to skip it for now. I am going to keep track of my day to day goings, what I eat, how I feel, etc. If you're interested, tune in!

Day 1
Woke up forgetting that I agreed to do the diet and since it's Sunday first thought went to food and what I would make (or make Nico make me) for breakfast. Then reality reminded me it was Day 1 and I decided to be up beat. So I smiled and reminded Nico it was raw vegan week, yippee!! I made him make a pact with me to also accomplish something he has been trying to accomplish recently but hasn't found the motivation and then we can both celebrate together at the end of our challenges. I got up and went to the blender.

Breakfast:
Smoothie
Ingredients: 1 cup blueberries, 1 cup strawberries, 1 mandarin, 2 bananas, 2 tablespoons chia, 1 cup water

Delicious!! I loved it!

Went for a 10k run, came home and decided it was time for another smoothie

Morning snack (or second breakfast):
(nicknamed the PMS smoothie as it is supposed to help with that time of month according to the recipe holder)
Smoothie
Ingredients: 2 bananas, 2 oranges, 4 cups spinach, 1 teaspoon Cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 cup water

Amazing! I loved it again, it was so filling, I gave 1/3 to Nico and took a while to finish it.

Lunch:
Salad
1 cup white and purple cabbage chopped finely
one carrot chopped finely
one radish chopped
sunflower seeds
pumpkin seeds
2 tablespoons avocado
1/2 lemon squeezed over tossed salad
crushed walnuts

Pretty good, was very lemony, but I really enjoyed the seeds, the gave the salad so much flavor.

Snack:
Macadamia nuts
one apple
all natural fruit roll up

Dinner:
Spagetti:
1/2 zucchini shaved with peeler to make thin strips like spagetti
1 cup broccolini cut in thirds
1 cup mushrooms

sauce:
In blender combined:
4 small tomatoes
2 cloves garlic
1/4 red onion
1/2 carrot
1 cup wanuts

Scooped sauce over zucchini noodles with broccolini and mushrooms and devoured. Delicious although too much garlic, probably better with one clove rather than two.

Snack:
all natural fruit roll up
banana

Day 1 was great, I am super excited about the diet, I feel great today, walked a while, ran 10k and did a leisure bike ride with a friend, have lots of energy, although ready for bed now. Excited to try new things and know everything that goes in my body is good for me and guilt free! Goodnight!
